Self Delusion is Very Scary

Thanks to the fact that Halloween is just around the corner, my son Caleb has just learned the word “spooky.” When most people think of spooky they think of being terrified by ghosts.

How about being terrified by a lie? In preparing for a sermon on 1 Samuel 15 these thoughts were “haunting” me:

“The most terrifying lie you can ever believe is the lie you tell yourself. The capacity of fallen man to deceive himself is frightening beyond words. The capacity of a lie to deceive is not a function of how deceptive it is, it’s a function of how delicious it is. It’s a function of how much you want to believe it. We have the capacity to embrace that which we know to be a lie simply because we want to.”
